A man suspected of setting a woman on fire in a tram in Germany has turned himself in to the police.

Police in the state of Thuringia said the 46-year-old husband of the critically injured woman surrendered at the Gera police station on Monday.

The victim, also 46, was doused with a combustible liquid on Sunday morning and set on fire. No one else was injured in the attack.

The police are investigating the incident as attempted murder.

What else do we know about the Gera attack?

Other passengers in the tram pressed the emergency stop button after the attack, something the suspect exploited to make his escape, according to the spokeswoman.

The driver of the vehicle reacted quickly and began dousing the flames with a fire extinguisher, she said.

The woman received medical treatment on the scene before being flown to hospital, the spokeswoman said.

She said the other passengers and the driver were offered psychological care.

Gera is situated in the east of the eastern German state of Thuringia, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Leipzig.
