German police arrest suspected armed bank robber

A 57-year-old man has been arrested on the suspicion of attempting to carry out an armed robbery at a bank in southwestern Germany. The perpetrator was reportedly injured after exchanging fire with police.

A 57-year-old man was arrested on Friday in the southwestern German town of Waldshut, close to the Swiss border and the cities of Freiburg and Zürich.

Local police were first alerted to the presence of a suspected armed robber shortly after 12:00 p.m. local time (1000 UTC) on Friday afternoon. The bank was closed off and neighboring buildings were immediately evacuated.

Two bank employees unharmed

Following an exchange of gunfire with police, the suspect was arrested and later treated for an injury sustained in the shootout.

Two bank employees reportedly left the building unharmed after staying in another secure room that the suspect could not access.
