German President Calls for More Donations

December 30, 2004

Germany's President Hort Köhlner has made an appeal to Germans to continue donating to efforts aimed at helping the victims of the tsunami catastrophe in Asia. "In the past few days many people in Germany have shown their great willingness to help," he said, adding that he was thankful for every donation that went to relief efforts. He echoed the German government's calls for debt relief for the affected countries, saying that the catastrophe illustrates that "we live in one world." He said he hoped that the tragedy would prompt closer cooperation among nations that could result in, for example, the establishment of an early-warning system for tsunamis.
