German President Proposes New "Super Museum" for Berlin.

September 2, 2004

German President Horst Köhler has proposed that Berlin create a "Best of Berlin" exhibition designed to capitalize on the success of the current MoMA show. Köhler's project foresees a special exhibition which showcases highlights from Berlin's leading museums and galleries, including painting, architecture, design, photography and technology. The plan has found widespread support among the city's politicians while its arts administrators are less than enthusiastic. Bernd Lindemann from the landmark Gemäldegalerie has dismissed the plan, warning against the risk of "intoxicating visitor numbers" that result in "one-dimensional" exhibitions. Director of the Berlin Galleries Jörn Merkert pointed out that "if the city's 160 museums had the same sort of publicity funds that MoMA had then more people would come."
