German Stalwart Ziege Considers Retiring

October 7, 2005

Germany's former World Cup star and Euro 96 hero Christian Ziege admits he is considering hanging up his boots after being plagued by an ankle injury. The 33-year-old Ziege has not played for Borussia Mönchengladbach since December 2004 and can not see any light at the end of the tunnel. "I have to think about ending my career after this long period of suffering," Ziege told Kicker magazine. "I'm not making any progress and can't see any treatment that would be successful. I can't go on forever like this." Ziege, capped 72 times by Germany, came to the fore with Bayern Munich but spent a large proportion of his career in England during spells at Middlesbrough, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
