German Stopper Criticizes Team Defense

October 7, 2005

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn insists Germany need to stabilize a fragile defense to have any chance of lifting the 2006 World Cup on home soil. Germany travel to Istanbul to face Turkey in a friendly on Saturday and Kahn believes the three-time World Cup winners need to stop leaking goals if they have aspirations to follow up their last triumph in 1990. "Jürgen (Klinsmann) wants to play modern football at a high tempo and attack," explained Kahn. "I understand that but you can not neglect the defense. Titles are won by the defense. Everyone knows that." In the 2005 Confederations Cup Germany reached the semi-finals - losing 3-2 to eventual winners Brazil - but Kahn believes that could not hide the fact that Jurgen Klinsmann's team shipped 11 goals in five games. Germany conceded just one goal to reach the 2002 World Cup final before falling 2-0 to Brazil in Yokohama.
