German Tsunami Death Toll Rises To 80

February 18, 2005

Eight more Germans have been confirmed killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami last December, raising the country's death toll to 80, the government announced on Friday. With more than 500 Germans still missing, the death toll is likely to rise further over the next few days as more results from DNA tests carried out by German experts on bodies in Thailand become known, foreign ministry spokesman Walter Lindner told a press conference. The Germans who died were tourists on winter sun breaks in beach resorts in Sri Lanka and Thailand. Lindner said 537 Germans were still missing more than seven weeks after the disaster which killed at least 288,000 people.
