German women's team finish stellar year with Norway draw
November 29, 2016In a friendly match watched by more than 5000 fans, Olympique Lyons’ Ada Hegerberg put Norway 1-0 up in the 13th minute as the hosts tested themselves ahead of next year's championships.
But Germany soon fought back, Josephine Henning equalising for the Rio champions in the 32nd minute with a powerful header. It was the Arsenal center-back's first goal for her country.
Debutant Carolin Simon replaced Lina Magull at the break as Jones' experimented with her players in the team's final game of the year. Germany created some presentable chances, with Svenja Huth and Anna Blässe going close, but they couldn't find a second goal.
After an injury to captain Dzsenifer Marozsán, which forced the captain off the pitch in tears, Germany found it tough to re-focus on the game and Norway had chances of their own to make the breakthrough but couldn't succeed.
"We knew Norway were a tough opponent," Jones told German broadcaster ZDF after the game. "We had great chances but we were simply missing a little luck today."
Germany will be looking to defend their European title at the 2017 European Championships in the Netherlands in July.
