Germany's government plans to bring back military service, to boost troop numbers to deal with the perceived threat from Russia. But voluntary conscription could become compulsory, if not enough recruits come forward.

Germany is introducing a new military service model as the Bundeswehr marks its 70th anniversary. Starting in 2026, 18-year-old men must declare willingness to serve, while women can volunteer. The plan offers flexible terms from six months and pay of €2,600 to attract recruits, aiming for 270,000 personnel by 2035. If voluntary enlistment falls short, conscription could return.
