Germany Calls for More Changes in Iraq Draft
June 3, 2004Germany, which disagreed strongly with last year's U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, has called for the United States and Britain to go further in their revision of the latest draft U.N. resolution on Iraq. Joined by France and Russia, who have veto powers on the U.N. Security Council, German officials said that changes were needed to the second draft submitted on Tuesday by the United States and Britain giving Iraq considerable authority over its security and economy after Washington's planned handover on June 30. Germany welcomed the revised draft, but made clear it was a starting point for further discussions. "Judging from a first read-through a number of points were picked up that were suggested by Security Council members to the sponsors of the resolution, the United States and Britain. That is to be welcomed and that will be the basis for further talks," a foreign ministry spokeswoman told reporters in Berlin.
