Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965) is widely considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Now, Germany hopes to see the houses Le Corbusier designed in the settlement Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart become the country's 41st World Heritage site.

Having already received a positive evaluation from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) bodes well for the city's chances. A total of 17 Le Corbusier buildings in Germany, France, India, Argentina, Belgium, Switzerland and Japan have been jointly recommended for the honor - with the decision being made by the UNESCO committee in July in Istanbul.

World Heritage Day

A total of 1,031 sites in 163 countries are already inscribed on the World Heritage list - 40 of them in Germany. The vast majority of the latter will be hosting special events on Sunday, from guided tours to family-oriented fun.

The Museum Island complex in Berlin will be offering discounted entrance, while visitors to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley can look forward to culinary delights connected to the famous Riesling wine. Plus: Aachen cathedral will be celebrating the completion of its 30-year renovation.
