Carefree visits to Christmas markets in Germany are no longer a given following a deadly attack on the market in Magdeburg in 2024. But local authorities and business owners are doing everything they can to keep the tradition alive.

The Striezelmarkt in Dresden, Germany's oldest Christmas market, attracts 2.5 million visitors annually, with nearly half a million staying overnight — making it a key economic driver. To ensure safety after past attacks in other parts of Germany, the city has invested more than €2 million in security measures like steel bollards, access barriers and concrete blocks, though future funding remains uncertain.

Smaller markets face rising costs and logistical challenges, threatening their survival. Traders warn that higher expenses could lead to price hikes and reduced sales. Despite these concerns, visitors continue to enjoy festive traditions alongside seasonal food and drinks.
