An estimated 750,000 fans packed the World Cup fan zone at the Brandenburg Gate on June 24 for Germany's second-round match against Sweden - so many that police closed the entrances to avoid a dangerous crush.
The Berlin fan zone is Germany's largest, a 2.5-kilometer stretch of boulevard on the Brandenburg Gate's western side with giant screens televizing the match live. The previous record was 700,000 for Germany's final group-stage match with Ecuador.
On Saturday, the area was filled to capacity an hour before the late-afternoon game in Munich, police said, even as people were still streaming toward the zone.
