Germany, France to Agree on new EU Commission Chief

June 14, 2004

According to German government sources, Germany and France plan on agreeing on a candidate for the president of the European Commission to succeed current president Romano Prodi. The information surfaced on the fringes of meeting on Monday in the western German city of Aachen between German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and their French counterparts, President Jacques Chirac and Foreign Minister Michel Barnier. A candidate for the top European Commission spot will be decided at an EU summit in Brussels beginning on Thursday. The meeting in Aachen also focused on the EU constitution and the two countries want to agree on their positions before going to Brussels this week. Industrial policy may also be discussed, the sources told Reuters, since it has become a sore spot between the neighbors after a French government-backed bailout of the engineering concern Alstom.
