In a significant shift for the German government, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a partial halt in arms exports to Israel. The decision comes on the heels of Israeli plans to take control of Gaza City, which have sparked widespread condemnation.

Germany has announced a partial suspension of arms exports to Israel, citing humanitarian concerns over a planned offensive in Gaza City. Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the operation would increase Israel's responsibility for Palestinian civilian suffering. 

While far-right members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government are pushing for a full Gaza takeover, military leaders have opposed it, citing risks to hostages and troop strain. Protests across Israel have demanded a hostage deal and an end to the war.
