Germany/Poland: The children of Lake Kamper

In March 1945, a flying boat with 70 children on board went down in Kamper Lake, now Lake Resko, in northwestern Poland. For decades, the tragedy remained shrouded in silence, but now plans are underway to salvage the wreckage.

The seaplane was carrying German children who were being evacuated as the Red Army advanced. The cause of the crash remains unknown. The families of the long-ago victims are divided over the plans to recover the wreckage.
