Germany's armed forces are courting young recruits with "discovery days." From 2026, everyone aged 18 will be asked about their willingness to serve. Conscription looms if the army can't fill its ranks.

The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, are courting teens through "discovery days" as they face a severe troop shortage. Over five days, 16- to 18-year-olds like Carlotta train with drones, weapons and live ammo to explore military careers.

With conscription off the table for now, all born in 2008 will soon be asked about their willingness to serve. The goal: 80,000 new soldiers to meet NATO demands — but officials hope volunteers will fill the ranks.
