A trade union has called a strike for workers at Germany's second-largest airport on Thursday and Friday. Travel disruptions loom as airlines are set to cancel around 1,600 flights over two days.

Most flight connections at Munich Airport are set to be canceled on Thursday and Friday due to a strike by airport workers, the airport announced on Tuesday.

Airport authorities said the airlines operating at the airport are likely to cancel most of the estimated 1,600 flight connections planned for the two days.

Passengers have been advised to contact their airlines for more specific information on flights.

The warning strike will start on Thursday at midnight and will last 48 hours until midnight Friday.

Munich Airport is one of Germany's busiest transport hubs, mostly for German flagship airline Lufthansa.

Why are workers striking?

Earlier in the week, trade union Verdi also called for workers to lay down tools at Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports.

The strike comes as Verdi demands improved working conditions for workers in Germany's public sector, both on the local and national level.

Demands include an 8% increase in pay, as well as three extra paid holiday days.

A new round of talks on Tuesday ended without any breakthrough.
