This has been South Korea's most successful World Cup ever. In the preliminary round of games in Japan and Korea, the South Koreans won two and tied one, landing them in the first group. The South Koreans won their Round of 16 match against Italy 2-1 with a golden goal. The wins represented an extraordinary turnaround for a country who's team had failed to score a single victory at five previous World Cups.

On Friday, Germany beat the United States 1-0. The last time Germany advanced this far at the World Cup was in Italy in 1990, when it made it into the semi-finals and ultimately became the world champion.
