Germany to Issue Stamp of Pope

April 15, 2005

Germany is to issue a stamp bearing a photograph of Pope John Paul II, the finance ministry announced on Friday. In creating the 55 euro cent (70 US cent) stamp, Germany is following in the footsteps of Poland, Austria and Croatia who have already announced they are issuing stamps of the late pontiff. Polish-born Pope John Paul II featured on stamps in the former communist East Germany in May 1990 to commemorate his 70th birthday.
