Germans wrap up camp

May 30, 2014

The focus for Germany now shifts to the friendlies against Cameroon and Armenia. For Coach Joachim Löw, there were a lot of positives to take from the team's training camp, despite some ongoing injury concerns.

Sunday's match against Cameroon will be head coach Joachim Löw's last look at his 26-man pool of players, which has to be whittled down to 23 on Monday.

The camp has been rocked by several injuries and Wednesday's car accident, but Löw is enthused by the mood of the squad ahead of their return to Germany.

The national team has two final warm-up matches against Cameroon and Armenia on June 6, before they fly to Brazil the following day.

"As for the team spirit, I can only say one thing - it is excellent," Löw said. "The team is more and more these days becoming a single unit."

Germany's preparation for the World Cup has been at the mercy of injuries to date, with Lars Bender dropping out last week and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's recovery from a shoulder injury taking longer than expected.

Löw confirmed that Neuer will be replaced in the Cameroon match by Roman Weidenfeller, but will remain his number one for the World Cup.

Captain Philipp Lahm dropped out of the final day's training as a "precautionary measure" after returning to training yesterday.

"It was a precautionary measure. He will rest this afternoon and do some more ball work on Saturday," Löw said at the German camp in St Martin.

Schweinsteiger and Khedira on the way back

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is ready to feature in the coming days, according to Löw, who is relieved to have him and Real Madrid's Sami Khedira almost fully fit in time for the World Cup.

"Sami's effort is immense, his ambition immense, his value to the team is huge," the coach said. "I think he'll definitely be ready at the beginning of the tournament."

As head coach Löw addressed the latest state of play in the German camp, he confirmed that Borussia Dortmund's Roman Weidenfeller would deputize for Neuer in the Cameroon match.

"We expect Manuel to be in goal on Friday [against Armenia]. We have two great goalkeepers with us [for Cameroon].

"Roman will start in goal on Sunday. He has left a very good impression in training."

Countdown to Brazil

The German coach also said that Erik Durm would likely come in for the injured Borussia Dortmund lef back Schmelzer, but it remains unclear which of the two will travel to Brazil.

Schmelzer has been recovering from a knee injury and has only recently returned to light running training. Club teammate Durm, four years his junior, has yet to make a full international appearance for Germany.

With Lahm missing for Sunday, Löw experimented with Matthias Ginter in the 8-0 training match win against the under-20 squad, and he still has other options in the shape of Kevin Grosskreutz and Benedikt Höwedes.

To conclude Germany's training camp in Austria, they were joined by more than 200 children who participated in some game sessions, before wishing the national team well ahead of their departure.
