Germany's defence minister backs the army's mission in Afghanistan as Bundeswehr soldiers join an offensive operation

German defence minister Franz Josef Jung has defended the German military's latest role in northern Afghanistan. He said 300 Bundeswehr troops were supporting an offensive against the Taliban which was being led by Afghan forces. Previously, German soldiers in Afghanistan have focused on reconstruction rather than combat operations. +++ SYN-MAZ +++
