According to recent reports, the McKinsey management consulting firm estimates that the country's switch from nuclear power to renewables will cost Germany 175 billion euros. But could it cost even more? Even transporting the power generated by new offshore wind farms in the north to southern Germany will require a huge investment. Stephan Kohler from the German Energy Agency says that up to 4500 kilometers of new power lines will need to be added to the grid. He estimates that this alone will cost some 28 billions euros. And he adds that building additional conventional power stations will also be necessary to secure basic energy supplies. Report by Marion Hütter.
