Germany's first state minister of Turkish origin is takes office

The first Muslim to be appointed a minister in a German federal state has been sworn into office. Aygül Özkan, a member of the conservative Christian Democrats earlier sparked uproar in her own party by saying crucifixes had no place in public schools. She also said Islamic veils should also be banished from classrooms. Özkan is now minister for social affairs in Lower Saxony.
