The thalidomide drug safety scandal was the worst in German history. The sedative was produced by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal, and marketed in Germany under the brand name Contergan. It was prescribed to women as a treatment for morning sickness, and caused severe birth defects. Over 5000 children were affected in Germany alone - and even today, they continue to fight for better care and compensation, and for recognition of the harm that was done.
