Migration: Germany's Merz criticized for 'cityscape' remarks

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has faced backlash for comments he made about "problems in the cityscape," linking public safety perceptions to irregular migration. Critics accuse him of pandering to the far right.

The far-right, anti-immigration party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), is on the rise in Germany, topping nationwide polls.

That's piled the pressure on the governing conservative CDU party of Chancellor Friedrich Merz to start delivering tangible results.

In recent weeks, he has come under fire for comments about what he called "problems in the cityscape," which were seen as a controversial effort to win back voters from the political fringes.
