Despite being the lowest seed in the women's draw at 28, Petkovic beat Errani on Wednesday to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.
After heavy rain delayed the start of the quarter-final action in Paris, the Bosnian-born German beat 10th seed, Sara Errani, 6-2 6-2.
Italy's Errani won the first two games of the match before Petkovic, 26, reeled off six games in a row to take the opening set in 27 minutes and finished the match in just over an hour.
Petkovic had previously made the quarter-finals at Australia, Roland Garros and the US Open in 2011.
Petkovic will face fourth seed Simona Halep of Romania on Thursday, while seventh seed Maria Sharapova of Russia will face Canadian and 18th seed Eugenie Bouchard.
