Germany’s top bicycle cities
February 20, 2015Münster has defended its title as the most bicycle-friendly city in Germany. According to a poll by the German Cycling Club ADFC, Karlsruhe and Freiburg come in second and third.
Conditions for cyclists are said to be particularly good in mid-sized cities. Münster shows just how popular a city can be for cyclists.
The large cities didn’t do at all well in the poll. Frankfurt and Munich came in eighth and twelfth while Berlin and Hamburg only made 30th and 35th place. Those polled criticized poor safety standards in major cities, caused by cars parking on cycle paths, bad traffic lights, construction sites and a failure to clear snow in winter.
More than 100,000 cyclists took part in the poll who gave points for safety and comfort in their home town. Some thirty million people in Germany use a bicycle on a regular basis.
