Ghana savors success as Africa's top gold producer

Ghana's glittering gold industry has long drawn buyers from around the world. Now, officials are reshaping the small-scale mining sector to boost output and ensure local miners share in the rewards. DW traveled to eastern Ghana to see how the reforms are transforming communities caught in a new wave of gold fever.

Artisanal mining is booming across Ghana, offering jobs and quick profits as global gold prices soar. Many locals take pride in the newfound prosperity — new houses are rising, businesses are thriving and the government's Gold Board initiative has brought fairer prices and more transparency.

Yet the boom also brings steep costs, including polluted rivers, toxic mercury levels and growing health concerns in mining communities.
