God has left the building: In Germany, an increasing number of Catholic and Protestant churches are closing due to falling membership numbers. What happens to these former places of worship once the final service ends?

Shrinking congregations in Germany are leading to church closures, demolitions and conversions for secular use.

This trend is fueled not only by a shortage of young priests but also by recent abuse scandals, prompting many to leave the church. Even those who remain attend services less frequently.

Once final mass is over, some of the deconsecrated buildings enter the portfolios of real estate agents, who list them as "special properties."

Some are converted into apartments, while others are repurposed as cultural venues, studios, pubs and bicycle shops.

DW looks into what happens to churches when God moves out.
