July 26, 2021

Death and Satan. Nudity and eroticism. Horrors presented in blazing color. Gothic art captivated viewers 500 years ago, manipulating emotions and arousing not only fear and devotion, but ecstacy, as well.

Around 1430, Western art witnessed a development that would be hugely impactful: Gothic art. Gothic art aroused strong feelings in its viewers. Fear, devotion and ecstacy: even today, the power of Gothic images is inescapable. Learning about the figures involved is an adventure in itself.

This documentary focuses on spectacular works from the mid-15th century. Purgatory, Hell and Paradise were pictorial worlds with which Gothic art told powerful stories. Leading Gothic experts show how innovative the painting style is, with its beautiful colors, daring erotic scenes, and outrageous devils and monsters. This is art at its best.

What made these paintings so innovative that they influenced artists for centuries afterwards? What led them to the lifelike and erotic depiction of female bodies? With her team, director and art historian Grit Lederer uses special macro-optics to take us closer than ever before to works including the famous Dombild Altarpiece and the mysterious "Liebeszauber", or "Love Magic".
