Off-grid villages in northern Ghana have long suffered from a lack of lighting and electricity. Now an older generation of women solar installers is bringing change.

In rural northern Ghana, many communities still live without electricity — but two pioneering “Solar Grandmothers” are helping to change that. After training in India through a UN program, Salamatu Abukari and Memunatu Abudu became the first solar technicians in their village. The women install panels, repair systems and are training younger locals. So what do the men think of this female empowerment — and its results? And what about the other residents? One thing is clear: With more than 150 panels now in use in the region, the Solar Grandmothers' skills are helping reduce energy poverty, providing clean and cheap electricity.
