Athen's reservoirs have run dry. The government aims to redirect mountain rivers to provide relief. But the residents of these mountain regions are anything but pleased.

Extreme weather — from sandstorms to flooding — has recently dominated headlines in Greece, but a deeper water crisis is unfolding.

The water level in the Mornos reservoir near Athens is dropping sharply, exposing submerged villages. Reserves may last less than a year, raising fears of rationing. Government plans to divert mountain rivers face local opposition, highlighting tensions driven by climate change, drought and rising urban water demand.
