Greece: Tax Returns in Trash Bags

The Greek government has announced a special property tax to help make up some of its disastrous shortfall. But the tax authorities are not up to the task.

Greece is burdened with a mountain of debt totaling 350 billion euro. That amount could be significantly smaller if Athens could collect the 40 billion euro owed by its citizens in tax. But the tax authorities already aren't up to the task. Their technology and equipment is inadequate and out of date. In the tax administration hallways, the unprocessed tax returns are piling up.
