Marcus SchlenchFebruary 21, 2012

The Bottrop region has set itself an ambitious challenge, with a plan to halve energy expenditure in the entire district over the next decade. The goal is to protect the environment and prevent climate change. More than 50 businesses and countless individual citizens are on board.

The project is certainly ambitious enough. But proponents say it offers numerous selling points, in particular private households stand to save money. It could also be attractive to companies who use a lot energy - if they can cut their energy bills it will make them more competitive. And it's likely to bring a lot of good press to a region that used to be known for its coal and steel industry. Report by Dan Hirshfeld.
