Giant miscanthus can cope with extreme weather — and is very versatile. The high-yield grass (miscanthus x giganteus) can be used to produce sustainable building and packaging materials, as well as net-zero energy.

Giant miscanthus grows extremely rapidly and can tolerate drought and heat. The supergrass can also be used for a wide range of purposes from biofuel production to making green building materials. Researchers in Germany are looking into how to make the most of its versatility to help slow down global warming.

Miscanthus x giganteus can grow four meters high. The plant hails from Asia, but can be cultivated in other regions. Among the potential rewards that could be reaped: sustainable insulating panels, peat-free soil substrate and net-zero toilet paper.
