Giant miscanthus grows extremely rapidly and can tolerate drought and heat. The supergrass can also be used for a wide range of purposes from biofuel production to making green building materials. Researchers in Germany are looking into how to make the most of its versatility to help slow down global warming.
Miscanthus x giganteus can grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) high. The plant hails from Asia, but can be cultivated in other regions. Among the potential rewards: sustainable insulating panels, peat-free soil substrate and net-zero toilet paper.
