Growing resistance hampers Ebola response in DR Congo

More than 200 people are now thought to have died from Ebola in the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Attacks on isolation centers and defiance of bans on gathering are hampering efforts to slow the spread.

Despite a ban on large gatherings, Catholic worshippers in Bunia, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, continue attending Mass amid a fast-spreading Ebola outbreak. Some say faith offers comfort and point to precautions, but health officials warn such gatherings and traditional funerals risk accelerating transmission.

Tensions are rising as treatment centers have been attacked, underscoring the challenge of gaining community trust.
