A suspect was taken into custody Monday after a gunman opened fire at a private Christian University in Oakland, California. Police said seven people were killed and three wounded.

Officer Johanna Watson of the Oakland police confirmed that a suspect had been detained "that we believe is possibly responsible for the shooting."

Police later announced they had arrested One L. Goh, a 43-year-old former student at the Oikos University, who surrendered about an hour after the shooting. Inital reports that authorities had recovered a firearm were later clarified by Police Chief Howard Jackson, who said officers had found enough ballistics evidence to confirm that a handgun was used in the attack.

"It's going to take us a few days to put the pieces together," Jordan said. "We do not have a motive."

Police and swat teams had formed a perimeter around the university on arrival, thinking the gunman might have still been inside.

Jordan said there were roughly 35 people in or near the university when gunfire broke out. Of the seven fatalities, five died at the scene and another two in hospital. The officer said that those wounded in the attack were in a stable condition, with at least one of them discharged from hospital.

Oikos University's website says its goal is to "provide highest standard education with Christian values and inspiration."

The school focuses on "religious studies, music, and vocational nursing" and caters to the area's Korean community.
