Hamburg Coalition Confirms Schill Replacement

September 3, 2003
The parliament of the city-state Hamburg confirmed Dirk Nockemann as the successor to the controversial ex-Interior Senator Ronald Schill on Wednesday. Sixty parliamentarians voted for Nockemann, 57 against and two abstained. The vote will enable the city’s ruling right-leaning coalition of Christian Democrats, Schill’s law-and-order party and the liberal Free Democrats to continue. Schill was sacked by Hamburg Mayor Ole von Beust last month after Schill, upset over the firing of another official from his party, threatened to make von Beust’s homosexuality and an alleged conflict of interest public. Schill contends that von Beust had a longterm relationship with Justice Senator Roger Kusch, who also rents an apartment from von Beust, and helped him land his position in the city-state's government.
