Hamburg finished a disappointing eighth in the league last season.

Hamburg have perhaps the biggest catchment area in the Bundesliga and are in good financial shape, thanks to their ability to sell off players like Rafael van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong at handsome profits. So why haven't they won anything in recent memory? It's largely because they've failed to develop an overarching tactical style, and because they've hired and fired coaches on an annual basis.

Despite another recent coaching change (Michael Oenning's interim tag was lifted in the off-season), there has been much talk of a clean break with the past. Sporting Director Frank Arnesen has cleaned house, letting a number of high-earners go, and bringing in hungry youngsters in their place. The rejuvenation project may bear fruit, but history says it had better do so quickly. HSV are not a patient club.

Fun fact: Hamburg is the only team to have played in the first division every year since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963.
