Hamburg's misery continues
September 26, 2006
Hamburg managed to break a club record on Tuesday ... but it’s not one to be proud of. The team has now gone 11 games without winning and their misery was further compounded with a 1-0 defeat at Russian champions CSKA Moscow. The game was decided on the hour mark when the Brazilian Dudu rose unchallenged to head in a corner. It was one of the few defensive lapses by Hamburg, but it proved costly.
Trainer Thomas Doll complained of a lack of initiative up front, saying Hamburg need to be more dangerous in front of goal to make an impression in top-level Champions League football. Things were not helped when striker Benny Lauth was harshly judged to have used his elbow in a challenge with Moscow’s Vagnger Love and was sent off just 5 minutes after coming on as a subsitute. In 2005 CSKA Moscow became the first ever Russian team to claim a European title when they won the UEFA Cup. Tuesday’s victory leaves them with 4 points from two games and they must fancy their chances of progressing. Hamburg on the other hand are yet to register a point and face an uphill struggle to reach the knock-out phase.
Elsewhere in Hamburg’s group, last year’s finalists Arsenal seemed to have settled quickly into their new Emirates Stadium. The gunners recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over 2004 champions Porto.
It was a crunch game at the Bernabeu in Madrid. Real Madrid and Dynamo Kiev had both lost their opening games. And it was 9-time European Cup winners Real who finally returned to form, thrashing Kiev 5-1.
Playing at their revamped home stadium for the first time in 9 months, Steaua Bucharest had their house-warming party ruined by French Champions Lyon, who came away with a 3-0 victory.
Benfica of Portugal knocked Manchester United out of last year’s competition but United got their revenge on Tuesday, winning 1-0 in Lisbon through Louis Saha’s late goal, in what was the Red Devil’s first away win in the competition for nearly 3 years.
Celtic scraped past Champions League newcomers Copenhagen, a Kenny Miller penalty separating the two sides.
It was only a home game on paper for Lille, the French team having to play their home matches at nearby Lens as their stadium does not meet UEFA criteria. But they still managed to hold AC Milan to a 0-0 draw, although the Italians did have a goal disallowed.
And it was a stalemate in the group’s other game. AEK and Anderlecht played out a 1-1 draw in Athens.
Germany’s other two representatives both face tough games on Wednesday night. Champions Bayern Munich face a tricky away game at Inter Milan, and manager Uli Hoeness is not taking the game lightly, saying Inter is one of the best teams in Europe, but Bayern will try to play their game and not wait for Inter. Elsewhere, Werder Bremen will be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat at Chelsea, but it won’t be easy: last year’s Champions League winners Barcelona are in town. They currently lead the Spanish Primera Division and beat Levski Sofia 5-0 in the first round of matches. Werder on the other hand haven’t won for 5 games.
