The Multinational Joint Task Force was supposed to stop the Boko Haram insurgency. Yet, jihadist violence has spread, as military coups have returned to West Africa in response to insecurity. So, what went wrong?

Under The Baobab shines a hard‑look on the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) and its battle against Boko Haram and the wave of insecurity that still grips Nigeria and the wider West‑African region.

Hosts Mimi Mefo Newuh and George Okachi sit down with former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai to ask: If the MJTF managed to weaken Boko Haram between 2000 and 2018, why are attacks still taking place almost daily, with women, children and elders still being abducted, resulting military coups resurfacing across West Africa?

Is the problem purely military, or does the answer lie in a broader approach that should include government, police, courts, schools, hospitals and civil society And, most importantly: did the MJTF really fail, or have we been looking at the wrong solution?
