Heart implants save lives – but could they be a risk if targeted in a cyberattack? That scenario was the topic of an episode in the popular German-language crime series ‘Tatort’. How realistic is it?

A popular German-language crime series has raised fears about heart implants being hacked —but experts say those fears are overblown. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, or ICDs, save many lives by delivering electric shocks directly to the hearts of patients who are prone to cardiac fibrillation. Cyberattacks on hospitals and clinics are rising, but so far there have been no known real-world hacks on implants. Specialists stress that they are safe, regularly updated, and vital for survival to many patients.
