Ex-German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt dies, aged 96. He was one of Germany’s most enduringly popular politicians admired at home for his unwavering principles and abroad as a pioneer of international economic cooperation.

The terrible floods in Hamburg, economic crisis, the Cold War and the Baader-Meinhof terrorist attacks: Helmut Schmidt made his name mainly as coolly rational crisis manager. To many, the Social Democrat icon still epitomizes statesmanship with vision. Yet, as German Chancellor, Schmidt was also highly controversial. This film looks back over his political career and, in particular, tries to pinpoint what really made him tick.
