Hermann Hesse Superstar

Hermann Hesse, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946, is the most widely-read German-language author of all time with a circulation of some 100 million books.

His novel ‘Siddharta’ became the travel companion for everyone visiting India. American hippies discovered Hesse for themselves, turning him into literary popstar and guru. To this day, millions of people associate Hermann Hesse with their formative reading experience. On the 50th anniversary of Hesse’s death, this documentary investigates how he became an icon.
