Marcello Mastroianni
Marcello Mastroianni achieved his breakthrough with "La Dolce Vita" in 1960, starring alongside Anita Ekberg. His image always remained closely associated with his role as a young and joyful lover. In the US, the Italian actor was one of the most popular foreign actors, performing in over 70 films. Mastroianni received three Oscar nominations, but never obtained an Academy Award.

Richard Burton
The Welsh actor had already attracted the attention of the Oscar jury with his very first performance in a Hollywood film, namely "The Klansman" (1952). However, when the name of the winner was announced, it wasn't his. He went through this disappointing experience seven times throughout his career. Burton was only topped by Peter O'Toole, who was unsuccessfully nominated eight times.
Another iconic star the Academy never recognized was German actress Marlene Dietrich. She became famous overnight with the German movie "The Blue Angel," which paved her way to Hollywood. Her first film there, "Morocco," gained her a nomination, but not an Oscar. And that was it.

Alfred Hitchcock
British director Alfred Hitchcock's peculiar talent for stirring fear in viewers has always remained unsurpassed. His thrillers, including "The Birds," "Psycho" and "Rear Window," as well as the dolly zoom known as the "Vertigo Effect" has influenced countless directors since. Despite his five Oscar nominations, the filmmaker was never crowned by an Academy Award.

Ridley Scott
"Alien" and "Blade Runner" are among the most successful science fiction films ever, but they weren't nominated in the category of best picture. However, there's still hope for Ridley Scott, as the 80-year-old director is still active. His movie "All the Money in the World" hasn't been nominated this year, but his next film, an adaptation of the Merlin saga, is already in the works.
