Historian's New Book Courts Controversy

October 21, 2003

Jörg Friedrich, the controversial German historian who created a storm over his last book Der Brand, or The Fire, which accused the allies in World War II of war crimes, is at the center of another heated debate concerning his latest publication. The new book, Fire Sites, includes disturbing photos of German civilians killed by allied bombing and reiterates his previous claim that Winston Churchill's decision to bomb a shattered Germany between January and May 1945 was a war crime. Friedrich has defended the book, published in time for the recent Frankfurt Book Fair, and the choice of images which show piles of incinerated bodies, mostly German women and children killed by British bombs.
