Historic Elections Pave Way for Two-Party System in Japan

In a landmark election, Japan's voters have ousted the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which had ruled the country almost without interruption for more than half a century. Yukio Hatoyama is set to become the next Prime Minister after his Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) won more than 300 out of a total 480 seats in parliament. Turnout reached a record high at almost 70 percent.
