Hong Kong's Democratic Opposition Split

14/12/09December 14, 2009

On Sunday, Hong Kong's biggest democratic force, the Democratic Party, turned down a proposal for lawmakers to resign in protest against the slow progress towards full democracy. Supporters of the plan had argued that lawmakers should resign in order to trigger a series of by-elections that could be turned into a kind of referendum to put pressure on Beijing. Hong Kong's democratic forces have been very disappointed by a "democracy blueprint" the pro-Beijing administration published in November.
