Once drought‑stricken, the indian village of Balapuram revived its water sources, restored ponds and check dams, and raised groundwater levels in just five years.

Balapuram’s story shows how a community can reverse water scarcity through collective action. Once struggling to find even a single pot of water, villagers faced drying borewells, failed crops, and long walks for daily needs. Led by former village council president Thennarasu, residents drilled new borewells, built check-dams, dug ponds, and planted trees to help the soil store rainwater for longer. Groundwater levels rose significantly, farming returned, and the village now has reliable water morning and evening. Their efforts earned national recognition, proving how local solutions can build resilience in a changing climate.
